Common Reasons Pipes Clog

Clogged drains are one of the most common and annoying plumbing problems to deal with, and to make matters worse, there are a few different reasons your pipes might be clogged right now, making it a problem with a lot of potential causes to try and fix. Here are a few common reasons your pipes might end up clogged.

Food Waste

Kitchen sinks can be easily clogged thanks to the food waste you throw away. There are many foods you should never pour down your pipes or destroy with garbage disposal, and part of that is because these foods can absorb water or get stuck.

Fatty and oily foods, in particular, are a leading cause of kitchen sink clogs. Instead of being washed away by the water, they coagulate and stay in the pipes as a barrier.

Other foods to never throw down your sink are eggshells, coffee grounds, and tea leaves.

Paper Products

Many bathroom pipes get clogged because people attempt to flush products that don’t dissolve in water. This includes paper products that you think would disintegrate, like tissues, flushable wipes, or paper towels. These items, however, don’t disintegrate the same way that toilet paper does. That means toilet paper is the only paper product you should be flushing down your toilet. Everything else should be tossed away safely.

Toys

As any parent with young kids can attest, toys can end up in the weirdest places, including your pipes. These toys don’t fit in the pipes properly, though, and will only get stuck. Unfortunately, these clogs can be among the most difficult to deal with, so it’s best to teach your kids not to flush their toys down the toilet.

Hair

Hair is a very common cause of blocked drains, especially for showers. Hair is so bad because it can get tangled and knotted and won’t break down when wet. This creates a blockage that gets other objects stuck as well.
