What to Do about a Clogged Toilet

What to Do about a Clogged Toilet

We’ve all been there. There’s nothing more embarrassing than a clogged toilet. To remove the clog, you probably get out the plunger and go to town. What you may not realize, however, is that there are often better ways to unclog your toilet.

Stop Flushing

Aside from the plunger, instinct may be telling you to just flush again and the problem will go away. Unfortunately, it can make the problem worse by just filling the bowl with more and more water.

Use Dish Soap

It may sound unbelievable, but dish soap can act to lubricate a clogged toilet drain. Add roughly half a cup of dish soap to your toilet bowl, letting it rest for a few minutes so that it has time to get to the clog. Then, use very hot water and pour that into the bowl as well. This should help to loosen the clog.

Snake Time

Maybe not the most elegant solution, but a coat hanger snake can help to break up a clog and help get your toilet draining again. Be sure to attach a rag to the hook of the hanger so that your bowl doesn’t get damaged in the process.

Hot Water Might Do the Trick

Hot water alone might do the trick, but make sure the water isn’t boiling — PVC pipes could be severely damaged in the process. Pour your very hot water into the bowl and let it sit for a few minutes while monitoring the water. If it starts to go down, you know it’s working. Then you can give it a flush.
